Mary Borgman, PEPFAR Uganda Country director is calling for more sensitization on male circumcision to address the increasing number of new HIV/AIDS infections.

Her concern follows a recent report by Uganda AIDS Commission showing an increase in the number of HIV/AIDs new infections occurring in young men who are not circumcised.

Daniel Byamukama the Head of HIV Prevention UAC explained that uncircumcised men aged 15 to 49 years were more vulnerable to sexually transmitted diseases, which in turn increases the risk of contracting HIV.

Now Borgaman says there are a number of reasons why young men do not want to be circumcised.

“The reasons could be related to pain, education, impact on relationship or how a partner would view circumcision “she said.

However sensitisation and education about the benefits and the safe practise need to be continuously shared with the population, we need to address all the social barriers, Borgman adds.
